Bilateral Stimulation Therapy App
Bilateral Stimulation Therapy is a neuropsychological treatment adapted from a treatment called EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). EMDR is a gold standard treatment according to the World Health Organisation for the psychological treatment of trauma. Bilateral Stimulation is a key therapeutic tool used in a treatment called EMDR.
Bilateral Stimulation simply means stimulation of both sides of the brain using eye movements, sound or tactile stimulation. Typically, it may involve moving your eyes from left to right whilst following a target or paying attention to sound in your left ear then to your right. Bilateral stimulation is referred to as a ‘bottom – up’ approach as it works on the lower parts of the brain, the limbic system, the emotion centre of the brain. This approach reduces emotional distress which allows the cortical areas of the brain (thinking, reasoning, planning) to become more active and effective. The effects of this approach is often experienced more quickly and easily rather than top-down strategies such as cognitive behaviour therapy (approaches that pay attention to your thinking in order to transform your emotions).
Because this therapy adapts elements EMDR, it is called BLST so as to not confuse or give the wrong impression of what EMDR is. BLST is a form of EMDR that can be practiced at home, work or any quiet environment where you can spend five minutes or so undisturbed much like meditation.
Using the app
The BLST app is a very minimal design to make it quick and easy for you to use. When you open the app you will be given a menu to select a mode. The app currently has two modes: BLST and FLASH. Both are different types of Bilateral Stimulation. When you open up the app you will have a menu giving you a choice between the two modes.
The BLST mode is set to begin when you open the app for the first time.
All you have to do is adjust the length of the practice and hit start. You can increase/decrease the speed to your preferences
The FLASH mode is set to begin when you open the app for the first time. The default time is 30secs. In future updates this can be lengthened.
The only controls in this mode is speed.
At present, the settings page allows you to set the click and tone for the BLST and FLASH modes.
Future updates will include a sound randomisation option for BLST.
